@Mick – you seem to have quite a sick iPod. Can you just explain, so after restoring the iPod and using it for a while, it randomly restarts and then the battery level goes drops? then the iPod requires restoring? <- is that right?
Yes this is correct and now I can't get it to power on stuck again at the charging please wait the iPod worked fine before swapping out the hard drive (only issue was the drive starting to fail) no prior issues with battery but even after replacing it still seems to have issues
@Mick – Reset the iPod and enter the diagnostics (straight after reset, Menu + Left) Drill down to A2D and view the battery A2D – and see if the that value is actually goes up when the USB lead is plugged in, and then what happens to it when the USB lead is disconnected – it could be you have got a bad battery.

Just installed my adapter last night in my iPod video 30G device. Using 2 Patriot LX Series 128 GB cards. Am running RockBox and have loaded about 60G of FLAC files. I’ve noticed that a lot of the tracks skip ahead at random intervals during playback. Is that a know issue with Rockbox of a sign of memory card problems? Anyone had a similar experience?
@Roger – Did you transfer your music using the Apple OS? The Rockbox USB Handler has a bad habit of corrupting the filesystem during transfers.
I copied the files off my NAS from a Win 7 laptop.

I am not sure what you mean between the two USB handlers. How would I know which one I used? Since bmy last reply I have deleted all the FLAC files and recopied them using robocopy and I think it is worse. Most tracks will play 15 seconds or so and skip to the next track. Guess I will boot into iTunes mode and try some MP3’s on it. Interesting thing I just tried. If I use the IPOD as a usb drive and play one of the tracks that was skipping from Groove music on my tablet, at the point is was skipping in Rockboc, there is a loud random noise. That noise is not on the source. If I copy the one track from the NAS to the Ipod it then plays fine. So somehow the files are getting corrupted during the copy.
@Roger – you need to dual boot back in to the Apple OS instead of Rockbox to use the Apple USB Handler – If I remember correctly you need to switch the iPod off, and then flick the hold switch and press Menu. You might have to check that sequence on the rockbox site.
Still seem to be having issues new battery but seem to have random restarts / freezes and then it goes from full battery to the please wait charging, then when i get it to come on it needs to be restored again
any ideas is the board the problem or something else

bought a new battery for the ipod classic and restored, music synced onto SD card so all working now
Many thanks for this ipod is so much quicker and also a lot lighter now minus the old hard drive
I bought and installed the iPod dual SD adapter with the Qumox 128gb SD card
All seemed to be going well copied over music etc but after leaving the ipod for a while the battery drained so i plugged in and left it charging (keep getting the please wait charging error now )
took it off charge and the level has dropped to showing red now (never had any problems with the battery)
Anyone else have any battery issues a if they know anyone selling the correct battery for the 7th Gen Thin 160gb Classic
@Mick – I cannot recommend anyone, but the ones I have bought on ebay have been ok, you do get the odd bad dead on arrival. Make sure you get the slim 580mAh battery which are normally titled as iPod 30gb battery.
I’m using two 256 GB PNY Elite Performance U3 cards in your dual setup… It is only using half of one of the cards. Please help.
I’ve gone through the steps of formatting them in FAT32 using Aomei.

That model is a LBA28 iPod which means it will only show and work up to 128Gb (https://www.iflash.xyz/store/iflash-compatibility/).
Yes it does work Ok under Apple OS / iTunes. In fact that’s how I deal with the problem…..I switch off the normal Rockbox way & immediately the screen blanks I flick ‘Hold’ to ‘On’ which after about 15 secs. sends the iPod into Apple firmware & I then shut down with no problem. BTW does this completely shut the iPod Down ?. ….or is the Rockbox part of it only in sleep mode (hope that makes sense !) ‘cos if that’s the case the battery will still be very slowly draining – Yes ? No ?
@ Pete Thanks for your input. Don’t think it’s a hardware problem as I placed the same Dual Adapter in 6.5 Gen 120Gb. (in addition to my 5.5Gen 80gb Video) Same result – iPod come back to life within 2 seconds of shutting down. I’m pretty sure it’s a Rockbox thing. I’ve posted the problem with tem but unfortunately not had much response.

Could it be a hardware issue? Perhaps something is sending a signal that is waking it up? Just speculating, but maybe the clickwheel or the hold/audio jack?
I’ve had ipods that did odd things, e.g. one that wouldn’t register if it had been connected or disconnected to USB till you reset it, and one that worked but refused to be put into recovery mode, one that kept stopping while playing (due to the audio jack disconnecting itself for an infinitesimal moment). Seems like there are subtle ways the hardware can malfunction. And I guess it might not show up with the original firmware as that doesn’t shut down fully anyway.
@Tarkan – Just tried about half a dozen of the older builds – same fault each time. Thanks all the same…maybe one of the forum members can maybe e-mail me a build they have had success with ? …….Auto shutdown on the idle timer again same effect as sleep mode & shut down – switches straight back on after 2 secs.
@John – Have you confirmed the iPod works ok under the Apple OS / iTunes ok?
@Tarkan – Can you recommend a build ? I currently use Version 3.13 automated via RockboxUtility on my 5.5Gen Video. Didn’t actually realise there were other different builds…….& No, there are no internal settings that control my problem. When in sleep mode same thing happens – 2 seconds after it shuts down, It turns itself on again !
@John – grab a older copy from http://download.rockbox.org/release/, no need to install just copy the .rockbox folder over. What happens if you let it auto shutdown on the idle timer?
Your next project should be a larger battery that fits in a slim case but takes advantage of the increase room.
Great success with Qumox 120gb + PNY 64gb. Good drag & drop (can’t live without Rockbox!) transfer speed & playback excellent. HOWEVER….in Rockbox mode, iPod WILL NOT switch off – shuts down for 2 seconds then switches itself back on again. It’s driving me mad……Anyone any solutions ?
@John – have you tried another build or re-installing Rockbox. Also is there any settings which controls this behaviour?

There is also a super battery that runs the length of the iPod.

@Matthew – the only battery that will fit with the iFlash adapters is the 2000mAh battery (plus thick case back of course) – all the others are too thick.

My combination is:
– iPod 5.5 (ex 80GB, thick)
– iFlash Dual
– 2 x 256Gb SDXC UHS-I (U1) Kingston SDA10/256GB
Using the Mac-Firmware (from Apple-iTunes)
Speed Test writes with 10-15 MB/s [copying 50GB takes “1 hour” using Apple-Finder], (with USB-cable to iPod)
But using the Windows-Firmware (from Windows-iTunes, needed for Rockbox)
same process is between 0-5 MB/s [50GB “5 hours”] (isn’t it too slow? Tarkan’s benchmarks (on 7.5g iPod) look better, even than my macPod-version).
I tried to format it first, as told in “Prepare SDXC (ExFat) for use with the iPod”; I tried with original SDFormatter, but result is same.
This is my experience.
Is there some more I could try?
Is it just a bad combination for FAT32?
It’s probably better to remove the card off the iPod and format it before testing it. It does take a while depending on the size.
@Tarkan – Thanks for the advice. I ran h2testw on my cards through the ipod (took FOREVER!) but it came back with no errors, so I suppose that means my cards are legit. Going to try ruling out a bad cable as a possible cause tonight. Please let me know if you have any other suggestions. Thanks!
it’s a bit of a hassle to boot using the Apple fw whenever you want to add music into your iPod when you use RockBOX but not that bad. I have a 5.5G 500GB 850EVO mSATA iPod that I use RockBOX only, so I have to do this everytime.
So, I managed to copy 330gb of music overnight without issues, rebooting the ipod in the apple firmware and using it in disk mode.
Now it works good, but it is not ideal for me even if with the apple firmawre the transfer is faster, I don’t like to do this trick every time I need to transfer some music.
I can still return my cards, and I’m looking for something else, the pny are not accessible here in europe, what other brands will work with rockbox ?

Received mine yesterday (I ordered two). Never knew your adapters existed until 7 days ago plus I’m quite ignorant of SD cards….WOW, these are a REVELATION ! (IMHO) I’ve been messing around with 5Gen iPods for about 18 months now. Buying ‘duff’ ones off e-bay, changing the battery & substituting SSD for the HDD etc. I’ve got approx 150gb of music so was always annoyed about the 128 SSD limit. My capacity is limitless now !
Immediately tried the adapter with a couple of 5 year-old ‘crappy’ micro’s (8+32) my wife used with her camera. First on my Apple 6.5Gen 120gb through i-tunes, then on a 5.5Gen iPod Video (Rockboxed). Both worked like a dream ! Can’t wait to purchase a couple of up to date SDXC’s now to cover my 150gb of music files. Can you advise me (Hells Bells! – there’s 1000’s of them out there.) on two starters (128+64) ?
PS…. The only problem with the old micro’s was the transfer time – took best part of 7 hours to drag & drop (Rockbox) 40gb worth of files !!…. I’M IN HEAVEN !!!! (or rather I WILL BE when I’ve got my new SDXC’s)
SO …. I tried my sandisk ultra, restored the ipod, installed rockbox with no avail …
I tried copying 29gb of music, but the ipod froze after 3gb, same error message: I/O error
I start to think that there is a problem with the adapter. Tarkan is a replacement possible ?

@Danilo – You can send it back for a refund no problem. There is only one way to determine if you have a hardware problem that is to restore the iPod to the original Apple software, that way you can determine if you have any actual faults rather than Rockbox issues.
