First Look: iFlash-Sata

First Look: iFlash-Sata

Just a brief look at my new product in my iFlash series.

While the iFlash enables the iPod to work with Compact Flash and SDXC cards, the new iFlash-Sata opens up all Sata based storage devices – mSata and externally powered Sata Hard drives and SSD drives.

The iFlash-Sata will work in the Video iPod (5g, 5.5g) and the newer Classics (6g, 6.5g, 7g).

Be warned the current crop of mSata drives are power hungry, so runtimes are not great compared to CF/SDXC – but still worth while if you must have a 1Tb iPod!

Here is some pictures of the mSata configuration.

@Support, I hope there’s meant to be eight pins in two rows of four as otherwise I’ve already broken it (or need new glasses). I’ll have another go tomorrow when I’m not so tired…

While trying to reattach the power cable the white plastic block & brown lift-up catch has come away from the pins on the iPod circuit board. Any advice on how to get it back on without breaking anything would be most welcome.

@Dave – If all the pins are there, then normally the white block will slip back on quite easily. You might find it easier with a loupe or magnifying glass.

From your comment it seems like you are running into power problems. Ssd’s are power hungry and im guessing you have the stock battery which is i think 520 mah. I recommend something with 1900mah or more. you can get 3000 mah batteries now for around $20 from china. If you go this route you would need a thicker back. Ask the ebay seller to see if they have a bundle.
If you get a chance sell the ssd and the board and get the dual sd card board. the price of sd cards are dropping. You can get a 256gb sd card for under $100. This will allow you to use the stock back and battery and have great battery life. Hope this helped

ok.I have already received the iflash and it works perfectly whit a 300x microsdxc uhs-1 lexar 64 gb. my ipod is a mc293 (7º gen?) with a dead hd toshiba mk1634gal 160 gb.
I have a ipod 4 gen 40 gb, with the hd dead, you have any solution for this ipod?

    I’ve turned into SSD iPod Classic the (MC293J / A) in the iFlash-Sata and Transcend MSA370 512GB,
When you play a video iPod Classic in one hour beyond the neighborhood will not be able to operate solidified.
Is there a means to solve this phenomenon?

    Tarkan,
I’ve noticed that over the 3 revisions on the iFlash-SATA adapter, there has been different components (possibly capacitors) on the adapter. I have the early adapter and was just wondering, does these changes affect the performance of the adapters? Do the new adapters perform better than the early ones?

@Hector – I am constantly revising my designs and making changes – that is what I do.

The revisions on the iFlash-Sata have mainly been to change the noise and damping on the iPods power circuits from the heavy power consuming mSata drives (like the 1Tb 840EVO). The actual performance between the revisions is identical.

I got the SanDisk X300 mSATA 128GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SD7SF6S-128G-1122 from newegg together with the iflash sata and using the stock battery. I found out that the 2000mAh battery was not going to fit in there properly without a thicker back cover. Right now the ipod I was experimenting on was the 6.5th gen 120GB. So I stuck it out with stock battery instead.

As of end of day today, Jan 23 2016. I was able to pull 12hrs straight playback with ~35% left on battery power.
The sandisk is a 3.3V @ 2A. I imagine msata drives with less than 2A draw would last even longer.
Anyways, i wrote an article about the whole process here: https://dcrin3.com/unscrambled/?p=1065

    HI

Loowing for a uprated battery for the 7 slim. Ideally don’t won’t to fit larger back cover. Had a look on eBay and Amazon but unable to find one in the UK

    Anyone got suggestions

@fireNice – I think that range of mSata drives do work, but that specific capacity has not been reported. But I would suggest you go for the iFlash-Bundle and a 128Gb SDXC card, it will work out much cheaper and better in terms of battery runtime. With a 128Gb SDXC installed it is not worth the extra expense of getting the 2000mAh battery either, as that setup will already double your runtime.

I ordered the mSata card from Tarkan and am now the proud owner of a 1tb iPod!

I’ve got the ipod 7g (MC297) and the Samsung EVO 840 1tb mSata. Initially I tried using an iPod 5g but the problems were just too much of a headache.
After installing the EVO, I got stuck in the sad face – low battery loop. I tried using a USB 3.0 mSata enclosure to perform the actions via Aomei to clear the drive, but no success. I got a mSata to Sata board and plugged it in to my PC, followed the instructions and then put it in the iPod 7g, booted up no problem at all, showing 930gb available.

I just wanted to give my thanks to all of the information posted on this site as well as any of the links to pertinent information. Thanks to the amazing youtube videos / step by step photo tutorial I was able to successfully install the iFlash – SATA and bring my Ipod(7thGen160GB) not only back to life, but better then ever. Shipping to the United States arrived well within the posted time frame. Now the only thing left to purchase is a heavy duty case.

    Hi tarkan,

Can you confirm that a Samsung 850 EVO mSATA 120 GB will work with iFlash sata? I do hope you will be able to respond as quick as you can, cause the buy-sign is under my finger right now. Hahahaha hoping it will be in the postbox just before Xmas.

Thank you in advance and wish you a merry Christmas

    1. Support

@Henk – it is not a drive which has been reported on, the 250Gb & 500Gb versions are known to work ok. I do not see any reason for it not to work!

    Hello Tarkan,

i have an 6th Gen 80Gb MB147, will this adapter work? Because i tried a normal ZIF to MSATA (128GB or 256GB) and always receive the red cross. The Msata is found within the service menu but restart disk mode etc. is not working. reset an red cross. It tried it with Samsung MZ-MPC256D / MZ-MPD128E / Liteon LMT-256m6M.
    The normal Harddrive is working.

    Thx in advance.

    Nils

    1. Support

@Nils – Yes it will work but your model of iPod will only show and use up to 128Gb. For capacities of 128Gb or 256Gb you are much better off using my iFlash-Bundle or iFlash-Dual and a suitable SDXC card than mSata.

Hey Tarkan, finally got my mSATA adapter in (brilliant little piece of hardware by the way) and I figured I’d report back on the mileage I’ve gotten out of it so far since something raised a small question.

I’m working with a 7G iPod 160GB slim, the iFlash mSata, and a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB mSATA drive. Opened the little guy up, swapped drives, closed the case, and restored from iTunes with zero problems. I even got a first sync of about 45GB in just to give it a test run. Everything worked perfectly so far. However, a couple of days later, when I plugged the iPod back into my computer via the Apple USB cable, iTunes gave me error messages saying the iPod was corrupted and then ultimately just started ignoring the iPod completely after I tried to scan and fix. The kicker is my Windows 10 OS still recognized the device perfectly fine, I was able to reformat the drive from there, reset everything, plug the device back in, and THEN restore the iPod from iTunes and start over with no problems (it’s currently syncing successfully as I type this message out to you actually.)

Do you have any idea what may be causing this? I know you said the 850 EVOs have some rather high demands when it comes to drawing in power to run, but I’ve yet to even see my iPod’s battery dip below 75% or so.

  14. Alex

@Hector, please tell me how the heck you managed to fit a 1900mah battery in there. I bought one expecting I could fit it but I am struggling. Also using a 5.5g 80gb video shell and the iFlash-SATA.

@Tarkan: I can confirm that the Crucial MX500 500gb model works great as well.

    Hi Tarkan,

How to deal with a red cross on a 7th gen Ipod with Samsung EVO840 1Tb msata card and Tarkan iflash if you are a Mac OS X user ?
Do you need a mSata-to-Sata adapter with a Windows PC computer to reformat the mSata card (FAT32) or is there any way to reformat the mSata card under Mac Os X ?
    Thank you
